On-device first: Aria is designed to process health data on your device where it can, and to send it off your device for AI processing only if you turn that on. In the current development build, some features do not depend on that setting, including looking up research and medication information, which sends the names of conditions and medications to a research service we operate and medication names to the U.S. National Library of Medicine's RxNav service, and spoken replies, which can send the reply's text to ElevenLabs to create Aria's voice; turning on Local Voice Only in the voice settings switches Aria's default voice to one on your device.

On-Device Processing
Aria is designed to process on your device first, to use Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which it treats as a trusted local tier, for some requests that need more computing power (health data only if you turn that on), and to use frontier cloud AI models for conversations and analysis only with your consent.
Cloud AI, With Consent
Frontier cloud AI models for conversations and analysis are used only with your consent; in the current development build they are reached through OpenRouter or with your own Anthropic API key. Aria is designed so health data leaves your device for AI processing only if you turn that on, whether it goes to Apple's Private Cloud Compute, which Aria treats as a trusted local tier, or to a frontier cloud AI model.
